The Race Is On!When San Jose East President, Derrick Chapman asked why Rotary did not have a special interest California license plate, the race took off! Lead by Rotarian, Maggie Wilhelm, the California districts all signed up for this long, windy, up and down 2 year race. It's been long and hard, but we've all worked together to make it happen. The finish line is now in sight. Here they all come: the California Rotary districts:5130, 5150, 5160, 5170, 5180, 5190, 5220, 5230, 5240, 5260, 5280, 5300, 5320, 5330 and 5340 competing to see who can finally reach the checkered flag, not far away now, to that 7500 application finish line. |

Their speeds are mounting because they all feel they are performing at "Service Above Self" levels to fund more educational, community and humanitarian outreach activities throughout California. They are happy to have this opportunity to promote Rotary and to serve the community.
Because this race of Assembly Bill AB1129 faced long, difficult roads to approval, each district is anxious to come in FIRST to display the moving billboards throughout their regions.
| Assemblyman, Dick Ackerman, from Fullerton, California is holding the checkered flag, proud to have guided and led Rotary International's bill to the finish. Maggie Wilhelm, who took this idea and made it happen, is so full of energy, she'll continue to keep everyone on track until the last district crosses the finish line and achieves their goal of 7500 applications and checks being delivered, with the winning checkered flag, by June 30, 2002, to the California DMV.

Leading the crowds with Derrick Chapman and Maggie Wilhelm are Rotary International President, Frank Devlyn, next year's Rotary International President, Rick King, and 5170 District Governor, Karl Stucki.
Standing in the crowds looking on are many smiling Rotarians from the states of Washington, Hawaii, Colorado, Nevada and Florida, all with the desire to have the same race in their areas!
